True gravity fail safe - why care?

Our shutters self-close in a fire (or during testing) via a thermal fusible link or via a fire alarm signal, without the need for electricity or battery back ups. This crucial life safety feature is critical because battery back ups are notorious for requiring regular maintenance.

Depending on the size and the application, we use single skin (Left) or double skin (Right) precision cold rolled zincalume steel slats (0.8mm to 1.2mm thick). We provide a standard range of powder coated colors.



Guide rails for (Left) concealed applications or (Right) exposed wall fixed applications are made from 1.5mm thick galvanized steel.


A fire alarm signal conversion panel (Left) will be provided to convert a voltage free signal to the required 24V DC to activate the gravity fail safe descent. (Right) Thermal fusible links are local detection systems to activate the shutters.



Layer 1 - Double Skin zincalume steel slats with ceramic wool in-fill: Zincalume steel slats of thickness 0.8mm, 80mm (h) x 22mm (w) flat lath sections. Two roll-formed interlocking slat profiles made from zincalume steel of thickness 0.8mm and dimensions 80mm (h) x 22mm (w), run along the entire length of the shutter without splices, creating a double walled slat with a cavity that is filled with insulating wool of a minimum density of 80 kg/m3 to provide additional thermal insulation.

Layer 2- Fire Rated Composite Fabric: Our fire rated fabric is a 30mm thick, light weight, multi-layered and non-combustible curtain. The fabric curtain remains un-deployed in the shutter box, until activated. Reinforced steel ribs run the width of the fabric which ensures that the stiffness of the curtain is maintained without sagging.

It is imperative that the two layers be independently operable. This ensures the dual functionality of the system.

Guide rails

A modular box guide design (minimum 500mm deep and 100mm wide is filled with insulating materials. This presents a neat design aesthetic with ease of installation that can better blend in with the surrounding structure.

Bottom bars

“Inverted T” sections are bolted to the leading double walled zincalume steel slat and to the fire rated fabric.

Shutter Box

The shutter box assembly is made of two heavy duty steel endplates of thickness 4mm – 7mm depending on the size of the shutter, joined together using cold rolled steel hollow sections 50mm (w) x 50mm (h) x 5mm (thick). Steel angles with slotted fixing holes are welded with the endplates to affix the assembly to the structure. 


The barrels are fixed to the left and right endplates using heavy duty sealed roller bearings, and are capable of turning independently of each other.

Box cover

The shutter box cover is made from 0.8mm thick zincalume steel sheets, with the edges folded to provide rigidity



Two motors, each suitably sized with a fully enclosed design. The motor has a high starting torque, built-in gear box (with an in-built speed governor) and a built-in thermal protector. In case of power failure, an endless hand chain is provided for manual operation from the ground level. Adjustable limit switches are used to set the upper and lower limit for the travel of the curtain. An ‘emergency-release lever’ shall be provided for emergency closing operation, which ensures that the shutter can descend by gravity at a rate which is maintained by the in-built speed governor.

Push button control

Two push button controls with ‘up’, ‘down’ and ‘stop’ buttons are housed in lockable push button boxes. The outer cover of the push button box is made of stainless steel. They are mounted on the same side of the shutter as the motors.

Activation in a fire

Each motor is equipped with these two activation mechanisms.

  1. Thermal Fusible Link: All fire shutters are equipped with a thermal fusible link mechanism. Upon sensing a temperature of 70°c, the fusible link mechanism releases the brake of the motor and allows it to descend by gravity at controlled rate, thanks to a centrifugal speed governor within the motor.
  2. Fire Alarm Signal: A 24V DC, 400mA normally open fire alarm signal needs to be provided at the shutter location. Upon receipt of this signal, an ERS-400 (electric solenoid releaser) releases the brake of the motor. A reset pull is provided to reapply the brake on the motor. Where a voltage free fire alarm is provided, a fire alarm signal conversion panel shall be used to convert it to the required input signal.

Please note that our shutters are TRUE gravity fail safe, hence no battery back-ups are needed.

1 phase, 230V, 50Hz, 13A / 3 phase, 415V, 50Hz, 20A power supply at shutter box location.

Fire Alarm Signal

24V DC, 400mA, normally open fire alarm signal at fire shutter’s shutter box location. Where a voltage free fire alarm signal is used, a fire alarm signal conversion panel will be provided as needed. See optional activation mechanisms.
